Brake Calipers

Brake calipers are arguably one of the most important components of a vehicle's braking system. They are responsible for putting pressure on the brake pads, which in turn apply friction to the brake rotor, ultimately bringing the vehicle to a stop.

The caliper itself is a clamp-like device that houses one or more pistons. When you press on the brake pedal, brake fluid is forced into the caliper, causing the pistons to push the brake pads against the rotor. This friction creates the resistance needed to stop the vehicle.

While brake calipers are durable and long-lasting, they can go bad over time. There are several signs that a caliper may be going bad, including:

  • Spongy or soft brake pedal: If your brakes feel soft or spongy and donÕt provide the usual resistance, it could be due to a bad caliper.
  • Uneven braking: If one wheel is braking harder or earlier than the others, it could be a sign of a stuck or seized caliper.
  • Brake fluid leaks: Check for any signs of brake fluid leaking from the caliper. This could be due to a damaged seal or piston.
  • Excessive brake dust: If you notice a lot of brake dust accumulating on one wheel, it could be a sign that the caliper is sticking or not releasing properly.
  • Abnormal noises: If you hear any grinding, squeaking or rubbing sounds when braking, it could be related to a bad caliper.

  • If you notice any of these signs, it's important to get your brakes checked as soon as possible. A bad caliper can compromise the safety of your vehicle, so it's always better to be safe than sorry. Volkswagen makes the only brake calipers that are designed specifically for your model, ensuring the correct fit and sure performance that you want.
