Automotive ignition is the process of igniting the fuel-air mixture in the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine, which starts its operation. Ignition systems have evolved over the years, from old-fashioned mechanical systems to computer-controlled electronic systems. Here are some essential aspects of automotive ignition that you should know.

Types of ignition systems:

Distributor-based ignition system

Distributor-less ignition system

Components of the ignition system:

Battery

Ignition switch

Coil

Distributor cap

Rotor

Spark plugs

High-tension leads or plug wires

Electronic control module (in electronic ignition systems)

Signs of ignition failure:

Engine misfiring or rough idle

Difficulty starting the engine

Engine stalls for no apparent reason

Reduced power and acceleration

Decreased fuel efficiency

Unusual engine sounds

Check engine light illumination
